Moldovan citizens pay roughly 5 lei more per cubic meter of natural gas than residential consumers in Romania—a difference that lacks economic justification, according to Veaceslav Burlac, a member of the “Miscarea Respect Moldova” Party and a petrochemical company manager in Romania. In an interview with Radar Politic, cited by bani.md, Burlac attributed the price gap to insufficient transparency in how Moldova procures natural gas.
“Moldovans pay nearly 17 lei per cubic meter of gas, about 5 lei more than in Romania. In my view, this results from the secrecy surrounding contracts with Energocom. I hope the authorities will declassify these contracts after the September 28 parliamentary elections, so we can understand who purchases the gas, why they do it, and whether the terms are correct and efficient,” said Burlac.

He also criticized the transfer of gas procurement responsibilities from MoldovaGaz to Energocom, which the government framed as a move toward energy independence. Burlac argued that the shift was politically driven rather than economically motivated.
According to him, the international market price for gas in April 2025 stood at 330–335 euros per thousand cubic meters. While prices have since increased by 15% to around 375–380 euros, Moldova’s regulated tariff includes a gas price of 845 euros per thousand cubic meters—more than double the current market rate.
Burlac’s remarks have added to ongoing public debate about the transparency and efficiency of Moldova’s energy procurement policies amid rising living costs and the approaching elections.
