Good news for Moldovans with dual citizenship! The U.S. has officially announced that Romania qualifies for the Visa Waiver Program

Romania, and consequently Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, now qualify for the Visa Waiver Program, which eliminates the requirement for visas for citizens traveling to the United States. This follows a drop in the visa rejection rate below the 3% threshold mandated by U.S. law, fulfilling one of the key criteria for program entry, the U.S. Department of State announced on Wednesday, November 27.

The Department of State released data on visa rejection rates for the 2024 fiscal year (October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024), showing that Romania’s rate stood at 2.61%.

During the 2024 fiscal year, Romanian citizens submitted 80,596 B1/B2 visa applications worldwide, nearly double the number of applications from the previous fiscal year. U.S. diplomatic and consular offices issued over 78,000 B1/B2 visas, a record number for Romania, according to the Romanian Embassy in Washington.

“The process of Romania’s accession to the Visa Waiver Program has been extremely rigorous and transparent, and the U.S. authorities’ evaluation of Romania is nearly complete. Romanians will be able to travel to the United States without visas starting in 2025, providing this generation with the opportunity to deepen the friendship with the American people and to build an even more prosperous partnership,” stated Andrei Muraru, Romania’s Ambassador to the United States.
