Passengers traveling within the European Union will soon be able to bring hand luggage weighing up to 7 kilograms on board without paying additional fees. The European Union voted in favor of the new rule, which aims to make air travel fairer and more transparent.
“This vote marks an important step toward fairer and more transparent travel,” said Matteo Ricci, the EU’s Executive Vice-President for Transport and Tourism, in a press release.
Ricci emphasized that establishing clear rules for free hand luggage is a fundamental right for passengers and helps prevent unjustified additional fees. “This ensures a fair and efficient system for all travelers,” he added.

Under the new rules, each passenger will be allowed to carry:
- One personal item (e.g., a handbag or backpack) with maximum dimensions of 40×30×15 cm
- One piece of hand luggage with a maximum total dimension of 100 cm and a weight not exceeding 7 kg
The regulation aims to harmonize luggage policies across airlines operating in the EU and will help passengers avoid unexpected charges at airports.
