Green energy boom in the third quarter: Energocom doubles its renewable energy purchases

In the third quarter of 2024, Energocom, Moldova’s national energy company, purchased over 1,110 thousand MWh of electricity, primarily from the local market and the Romanian OPCOM exchange. The increase in consumption resulted from higher temperatures in July, which raised demand by 50,000 MWh compared to the same month the previous year.

Between July and September, the Moldovan thermoelectric plant in the Transnistrian region accounted for 82% of total consumption, amounting to 912,966 MWh, while the power plants in Chisinau and Balti contributed just 1% (12,150 MWh).

A key trend was the rise in renewable energy, which now constitutes 6% of Energocom’s total purchases, primarily due to solar parks. In August 2024, renewable energy production doubled compared to the same month in 2023, reaching 21,236 MWh, up from 11,600 MWh last year. This growth trend has been evident almost every month in 2024, signaling a continuous expansion in the renewable energy sector.
