The Ministry of Education will reorganize dozens of schools across Moldova. The Government approved amendments to the Education Code that require the Ministry to compile annually, by December 31, a list of institutions subject to reorganization. Authorities will base the list on data from the Education Management Information System regarding student numbers as of October 1 of the current year.
The Ministry of Education and Research will publish the reorganization order on its official website and in the Official Monitor of the Republic of Moldova.
Under the new rules, schools with fewer than 30 students in total in upper secondary grades (X to XII) will stop admitting students to the 10th grade starting with the next academic year. Authorities will transform these institutions into lower secondary schools, or gymnasiums.
Institutions with fewer than 35 students in total in lower secondary grades (V to IX) will become primary schools. Authorities will reorganize schools with fewer than 30 students in total into primary school kindergarten institutions, while schools with fewer than 10 students in total will become kindergartens.
The new provisions will apply to educational institutions located within a distance of up to 20 kilometers from another school of the same or higher level that uses the same language of instruction.
The Ministry of Education reports that nearly 91 schools currently have fewer than 50 students, while 247 schools have fewer than 90 students. Statistics also show that in 2025 the average exam score in schools with fewer than 30 students reached 5.77, compared to 7.1 in larger schools.
The reorganization will affect about 1,328 students from 73 schools. Authorities will provide free school transportation, financial support for parents, and professional retraining, relocation assistance, and transportation reimbursement for teaching staff. Teachers who accept positions in another district will also receive relocation allowances.
