“I will definitely return.” Ambassador Margret Uebber on what Moldova means to her at the end of her term

The Republic of Moldova can count on Germany’s unconditional support on its European path — this was the message conveyed by Ambassador Margret Uebber in an exclusive interview with RLIVE TV just before the end of her mandate in Chisinau. The diplomat spoke about reforms, security, and what Moldova has come to mean to her personally.

“We have supported Moldova politically since it submitted its application for EU membership in March 2022. I believe Germany has strongly and consistently advocated for Moldova’s integration into the European Union. It includes support for administrative reform, financial management reform, and many other areas,” Uebber said.

She also acknowledged the persistent challenges — justice reform, the fight against corruption, and economic revitalization — but emphasized that Germany remains an active and committed partner.

“The main challenge, in my view, is to revive the economy. It’s a long-term process — it can’t happen overnight — but action is necessary. We’re trying to help; I believe this is where we see real progress. We have already achieved much.”

Ambassador Uebber also spoke warmly about her connection to Moldova’s culture and traditions, expressing particular affection for local cuisine and traditional dress:

“I was deeply impressed by Moldova’s natural beauty and monasteries during my travels across the country. I enjoyed the festivals in Chisinau — Wine Day, City Day, and the marathons. I even participated in a marathon for the first time in my life! It was heartwarming to see how people come together, celebrate peacefully, and enjoy these moments.”

“I truly enjoyed Moldovan cuisine. And as you can see, I’m wearing the “ie” — the national blouse of Moldova. I must admit, I bought three, and I’m taking them home with me as a cherished memory of Moldova and its culture.”

At the close of the interview, Margret Uebber delivered a warm message to the Moldovan people:

“I want to assure you that Germany will remain on Moldova’s side. The new German government has committed to this, and I am confident that my successors will continue strengthening our relationship. I encourage Moldova to stay on this path. I’m convinced this road will bring peace, stability, and development for Moldovans.”

“It has been very easy to work here. I always found open doors and met people with a positive attitude toward my country. And yes — I will return.”
