Starting January 1, 2026, Moldovan authorities will issue modernized passports and travel documents. The International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Union set the technical requirements for these documents. Moldovan authorities designed them to include advanced biometric features and unified identification codes. The Government approved a draft law to implement this change. The new documents will strengthen security by integrating modern identification technologies that better protect personal data and prevent forgery attempts. Border police will verify the documents quicker at any checkpoint because they follow a standard format and contain biometric data like facial images and fingerprints.

A key update is that the documents will include information in three languages—Romanian, English, and French—ensuring international recognition and usability. Another advantage is faster border control, enabled by their compatibility with electronic systems in other countries.
