Iohannis at the UN: “Romania will support the strengthening of Moldova’s resilience”

Romania will continue to offer unwavering support to strengthen Moldova’s resilience, according to President Klaus Iohannis. He made these remarks during his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

President Iohannis emphasized Romania’s commitment to upholding the international order, noting that “insecurity persists in many parts of the world” and underscoring the need for solutions to restore peace and protect international law.

“As global leaders gathered here, we share the fostering responsibility of a better global vision and the determination to turn it into reality. No matter how unstable the world is, the answer to our challenges will always be greater cooperation and solidarity. Romania will always support the international order, with the UN at its center. To find solutions, we must take a more responsible approach to understanding the world’s challenges,” Iohannis stated.

He pointed to the devastating global impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine, calling it “the biggest security crisis in recent European history.” In response, Romania has provided strong, multifaceted support to Ukraine and its people, pledging to maintain that support for as long as needed. Romania also remains committed to bolstering Moldova’s resilience, recognizing it as the second most affected country by the conflict.

“Our security is not just regional; it is global,” Iohannis stressed, adding that “this brutal war has already affected nations and people worldwide.”

He highlighted Romania’s critical role in facilitating Ukrainian grain exports through its Danube and Black Sea ports. “A prolonged conflict is unacceptable, and we must remain steadfast. Ukraine needs the unwavering support of all UN member states committed to upholding international law and the UN Charter. Romania fully supports President Zelenskyy’s Peace Initiative, as it offers the only path to a just and lasting peace, in full alignment with the UN Charter and international law,” Iohannis added.

The high-level segment of the 79th United Nations General Assembly session took place in New York from September 23 to 27.
