The Mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, called for the urgent convening of the National Emergency Situations Commission and ordered the mobilization of all available forces due to dangerous weather conditions across the country. He urged the public to avoid travel and stay at home to reduce risks and allow specialized services to intervene effectively.
According to Ceban, meteorologists forecast that difficult conditions will persist in the coming days. He stated that local authorities have been raising alarms to the Government and responsible institutions since 5:00 a.m. “Ice and black ice cover the country. While national and main roads remain somewhat passable, ice forms rapidly in towns and on adjacent streets,” he said.
In Chisinau, teams have been working continuously for three days. Ceban said approximately 1,500 people — workers, volunteers, and representatives of economic agents — are clearing snow and controlling ice. “We intervene 3–4 times on the same streets. It rains and freezes again, and even three layers of anti-slip material are no longer sufficient,” he explained.
The mayor warned that if temperatures remain at the same level, authorities may need to declare a state of emergency. He appealed to businesses, block administrators, and construction companies to actively clear ice and ensure safety in the areas they manage.
“This is not a situation only in Chisinau; we must combine our efforts. It is a matter of people’s safety,” Ceban emphasized during the CMC meeting.
