The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to purchase a headquarters for the Republic of Moldova diplomatic mission to the European Union. The government will create a commission to identify a suitable property, and the price could reach up to 4 million euros, excluding costs related to finalizing ownership documents.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs state that acquiring a permanent headquarters is necessary to create proper working conditions in line with legal standards and to ensure efficient representation, coordination, and cooperation with European Union institutions.
According to the ministry, recent restructurings increased the number of positions at the mission from 10 to 27. Between October 2024 and January 2025, eight experts from Moldova line ministries joined the mission on secondment at the current headquarters in Brussels.
At present, the mission employs 22 staff members, including 20 seconded employees and two people hired under service contracts. The current building has reached maximum capacity. All five available offices are fully occupied, each hosting three to four workstations, which is the legal limit.
By purchasing its own headquarters, the mission would eliminate high rental costs of approximately 300,000 euros per year, with an average monthly rent of around 25,000 euros, Moldovan diplomats explained.
The new headquarters should cover up to 1,000 square meters and include a suitable meeting room for official delegations. This space would allow the mission to add 10 more employees and would remove monthly rental expenses of about 25,000 euros. Officials estimate that the investment would amortize over roughly 15 years.
The ministry has already reviewed market offers, with prices ranging from 2.5 million to 4 million euros. Cheaper properties would require additional investments and renovation works of up to 1.5 million euros. Buildings priced between 3 and 4 million euros already include major renovations, requiring only cosmetic improvements and office partitioning.
Negotiations and administrative procedures could take several months to up to one year.
In 2026, the Ministry of Finance allocated 81.6 million lei to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the purchase of the new headquarters of the Republic of Moldova Mission to the European Union.
The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Realitatea that the current headquarters of the diplomatic mission belongs to the Republic of Moldova.
