On July 5, 2025, artist Ludmila Cuptor officially brought Moldova into the Guinness World Records by creating the world’s largest Ebru painting at Port Mall Chisinau. She painted the 40-square-meter artwork — using the traditional Turkish water painting technique — live in front of an audience, becoming the first Moldovan artist to receive such international recognition.
Pauline Ann Sapinska, the Guinness World Records representative who traveled from the United Kingdom for the event, conducted technical checks, confirmed the measurements, and publicly declared the achievement.
More than 200 people, including 100 honored guests — such as diplomats, government officials, cultural leaders, partners, and members of the press — attended the event. Among the distinguished guests were the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Moldova, the Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Turkey, Vladimir Andries (Director of the National Museum of Art of Moldova), and Alexandru Argint (Deputy Director of the National Museum of History of Moldova). Organizers welcomed the guests on a red carpet, adhering to official protocol standards.

Cuptor painted the record-breaking piece by hand over more than 90 minutes, applying five colors using the Ebru technique, which involves painting on water and transferring the image onto canvas. She worked under the direct supervision of the Guinness official, who measured the final piece and presented her with the official Guinness World Records certificate.
Cuptor first discovered Ebru during a 2019 trip to Italy. Inspired by her friend Daniel Frumusachi — a Moldovan sommelier who also set a Guinness World Record — she submitted her application in 2021. After Guinness rejected her initial proposal, she revised and resubmitted it in 2025, receiving approval.
“I put in tremendous effort to prepare for the record,” Cuptor said. “Two months before the event, I traveled to Turkey to buy special paints and pigments. Then, I returned to Moldova to prepare everything technically for the painting.”
Cuptor also shared her plans to promote Ebru in Moldova. She aims to host workshops, introductory courses, and exhibitions to make the rare technique more accessible to the public.
Chisinau City Hall, Port Mall Chisinau (the official venue and partner), the Directorate General for Education, Youth, and Sports, and the Protocol.md (event coordinator), supported and facilitated the record-setting event.
