More than 800 people registered for this year’s edition of the Diaspora Congress, which will take place on August 15 at the Palace of the Republic in Chisinau. President Maia Sandu will also attend the event.
Speakers will discuss the following topics:
- European integration, with Prime Minister Dorin Recean as speaker
- Civic activism and the fight against disinformation
- Diaspora youth – leaders of tomorrow
- Diaspora involvement in local development
- Moldovans abroad – cultural ambassadors of the Republic of Moldova around the world
For Radio Moldova, government representatives emphasized that they will give special attention to young people who left for studies abroad. Officials warned about the risk that, once integrated into host countries, these students may gradually lose their connection with the Republic of Moldova.
“Students are the ones we must keep close to the Republic of Moldova. As a state, we don’t want to lose contact with these students. Young people integrate very quickly; they learn the language of the country they moved to, and in this phenomenon of globalization and permanent internationalization, we must be careful. There are generations who no longer know the Romanian language, and we risk not bringing them back. The state must build tools that highlight the Romanian language, national identity, and our traditions. We must maintain this communication between the Republic of Moldova and the students who went abroad,” added Ana Calinici.
During the Diaspora Congress, the Bureau for Diaspora Relations will present programs designed to support the return of young people to Moldova. These include an initiative that, within a single year, brought back 28 graduates from abroad by offering scholarships, mentorship, and reimbursement of transportation expenses.
At the end of the event, participants will adopt a resolution that reflects the conclusions of the discussions and the proposals formulated in the workshops. Community leaders and activists will contribute ideas during public consultations before participants adopt the document, which sets policy priorities for the next two years.
