Maia Sandu at the meeting with Marcel Ciolacu: “Romania remains a reliable partner for the Republic of Moldova and for our European path”

During an official visit to Chisinau, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu met with President Maia Sandu. “I expressed my full support for Moldova’s development to President Maia Sandu today. We stand with Moldova in realizing its European dream,” Ciolacu stated.

The visit, taking place just the referendum ahead on Moldova’s accession to the European Union, which coincides with the presidential elections, focused heavily on Moldova’s path toward European integration.

Prime Minister Ciolacu emphasized that Romania firmly believes in Moldova’s European future and will continue to support its efforts unequivocally. He acknowledged Moldova’s determination to advance confidently and responsibly along this path despite unprecedented crises and hybrid challenges stemming from Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“Today, we reviewed Romania’s strong support for Moldova and explored ways to streamline this assistance. We will keep supporting Moldova on this journey by launching concrete projects and sharing our European integration experience. Our joint efforts aim to give citizens and communities hope for a better future, democracy, development, and stability,” Prime Minister Ciolacu added.

The two leaders also discussed joint Moldova-Romania projects, including the first bridge construction in decades. It will connect Iasi County and Ungheni District. In addition, they are modernizing several bridges over the Prut River, with plans to build four more in the future.

“Education remains a key area of cooperation. Today, we distributed 20 more school minibusses to districts across the country, part of the 69 buses purchased this year with Romania’s support,” President Sandu noted in a press release.

President Sandu also welcomed Romania’s recent financing for the Donici Family Mansion restoration, located at the corner of Metropolitan Banulescu-Bodoni and 31 August 1989 Streets.

“Romania remains a steadfast partner for Moldova and our path toward European integration,” the president emphasized.

Prime Minister Ciolacu praised the respect Moldova has gained from its European Union partners. He commended President Sandu’s commitment to implementing the reforms needed for EU accession, showcasing an exemplary approach for Europe.

As part of his visit, Ciolacu attended a ceremony marking the delivery of 20 school minibusses destined for Moldova’s villages and towns. Since July 2023, Romania has financed 69 school buses under the €100 million non-refundable financial assistance agreement. An additional nine minibusses will be delivered soon.
