President Maia Sandu called on authorities to introduce mandatory scanning of all postal parcels entering the Republic of Moldova, regardless of the transport operator, citing risks related to drug trafficking. She made the statement after a session of the National Security Council.

The President emphasized the need for investments in modern equipment and human resource development, noting that major infrastructure gaps currently prevent effective traceability of parcels.

“We must ensure the scanning of all postal parcels, regardless of the operator through which they arrive in the Republic of Moldova. We recognize that the infrastructure is not adequate to guarantee traceability,” Sandu said.

She highlighted that a priority task is to quickly identify a technical solution to prevent drugs from entering the country via parcels. In this regard, responsible institutions were urged to expedite the approval process for the necessary measures. Sandu also stressed the importance of more efficient risk analyses to optimize the use of available resources.

“Resources are never enough, so we must know exactly where to allocate them and prioritize correctly,” she added.

Authorities are expected to propose concrete solutions for modernizing the control system and strengthening the capacity to prevent illicit trafficking through postal services.

The National Security Council meeting focused on measures to combat cross-border crime and address the security risks generated by this phenomenon.
