“Our European path would not have been possible without Romania’s sincere and unconditional support. On behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, I thank President Klaus Iohannis for everything we have achieved together.” It is President Maia Sandu’s message to Klaus Iohannis, who announced his resignation as President.
“The Republic of Moldova has had a reliable friend in Bucharest during these difficult years. Throughout President Klaus Iohannis’ term, we could always count on Romania’s help—from energy supplies to local infrastructure projects in our villages, from pandemic vaccines to the new bridge construction, literally and figuratively. Our economy is stronger thanks to Romanian investment, and many of our schools and kindergartens are in better condition thanks to the generous support we have received. On behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, I thank President Klaus Iohannis for everything we have achieved together,” wrote the head of state.
President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on February 12, 2025, at the Cotroceni Palace. He stated that he was stepping down to avoid being suspended in parliament, which he described as “a useless endeavor” that would make Romania “the laughing stock of the world” abroad.
