President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, delivered a speech on Wednesday, March 11, in the plenary session of the Republic of Lithuania Parliament on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the country’s restored independence, being the first state to fully break free from Soviet occupation.

During her speech, Sandu presented a copy of the resolution adopted by the Chisinau legislature on May 31, 1990, which recognized Lithuania’s restored independence.

“Moldova was the first country in the world to take this step, even though at that time we were still part of the Soviet Union. It was our own small act of courage. A gesture of solidarity made before we ourselves were free. And today, 36 years later, I come before you to say: the spirit of that gesture endures,” said the President.

Referring to Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Sandu sent a firm message that Russia will not prevail: “Behind the triumphalist headlines and territorial claims lies a system under enormous pressure. Ukraine is not only surviving but innovating, redefining how modern wars are fought. Ukraine’s survival goes hand in hand with ours,” she declared.

The President also highlighted the hybrid war Russia conducts against Moldova: “funding opposition parties, using energy as a weapon, disinformation campaigns, and attempts to buy votes. Despite this, the citizens of Moldova have chosen Europe through a constitutional referendum, presidential elections, and parliamentary elections won in spite of unprecedented pressure.”

Sandu concluded with a call for support from Lithuanian lawmakers: “We do not ask for more than the chance you had. We do not ask for more than the support you received,” adding that Moldova is modernizing under the conditions of a war on its border and ongoing hybrid attacks, working against the clock.

The President thanked Lithuania for its consistent support to Moldova and Ukraine and urged Vilnius to continue advocating in Brussels, in the European Council, and in all relevant forums, for the EU’s expansion to include those who have truly earned their place in the European family. Lithuania will assume the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2027.
