President Maia Sandu said that opinion polls show that most Moldovans do not currently support unification with Romania. She made the statement at a press conference on Thursday, January 22.

The president stressed that the Republic of Moldova is a democratic state and that decisions on the country’s strategic direction depend solely on the will of its citizens. She also said that she has not discussed this topic with European leaders.

Maia Sandu said that her main priority is peace, security, and keeping Moldova part of the free world, especially in a difficult regional and international context. She explained that Moldova can ensure these goals through accession to the European Union or through protection under Romania. She noted that European integration has majority public support, as shown by referendums, elections, and opinion polls, while unification with Romania does not have majority support. She emphasized that Moldova will move forward strictly according to the choice of its citizens.

Two weeks earlier, Maia Sandu said in an interview that she would vote in favor if a referendum on unification with Romania were held.
