Maia Sandu Nominates Alexandru Munteanu as Candidate for Prime Minister

President Maia Sandu signed a decree today, October 24, appointing Alexandru Munteanu as the candidate for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova.

The decision follows consultations with parliamentary factions, held in the context of forming a new government.

“I wish him success in forming a government that will gain the trust of Parliament and fulfill the most important expectations of citizens: protecting peace, preparing the country for EU accession, strengthening the economy, and improving people’s living standards,” stated Maia Sandu.

According to the Constitution, the appointed candidate will now present the government program and the list of Cabinet members to Parliament in order to request a vote of confidence.



The Action and Solidarity Party had consultations with the President today, October 24th. According to Grosu, the discussions focused on the timeline of the next steps, and the President will sign the decree designating the candidate in a short time.

On Thursday, the President had consultations with the opposition parties, who came with criticism towards the way the candidate was proposed by the PAS. While some representatives declared that they will not support the candidate proposed by the ruling party, others said they will decide after having discussions with Alexandru Munteanu.

Born on January 20th, 1964, in Chisinau, Alexandru Munteanu is an economist, university professor, and businessman. He has worked in the higher education field, in the administration of the National Bank of Moldova, and in prestigious international institutions, including the World Bank.
