Maia Sandu on Europe Day: EU Accession Ensures Peace, Security, and Prosperity

On Europe Day in Ungheni, Maia Sandu stated that EU accession ensures peace, security, and prosperity. She visited the country’s border alongside Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, who officially visits Moldova.

The president also marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and highlighted the significance of May 9 for Moldovan citizens, as a day to honor their ancestors and reaffirm their European path.

“Our path to Europe leads to a better life for all of us—a safer, freer, and more developed Moldova,” Sandu said. “This journey demands courageous decisions, tireless work, hope, and justice long awaited by our people.”

She emphasized Moldova’s recent progress, such as gaining EU candidate status, launching reforms, and aligning with European standards. “We’ve shown determination to keep going, to work hard, regardless of obstacles.”

Sandu thanked Moldovan citizens for choosing democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, and expressed gratitude to European partners for their support. “EU membership is not an end in itself,” she added. “It’s how we guarantee our people’s peace, safety, and well-being.”

She underscored the transformative impact of European projects in Moldova, including infrastructure, education, health, and culture, calling them “living proof of the benefits of our EU path.” Sandu concluded by reaffirming the country’s commitment to European values amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the desire to live in freedom and peace.
