Maia Sandu Revokes Moldovan Citizenship of Three People Linked to Transnistria

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has revoked the citizenship of three individuals: Iurie Cara, Andrei Safonov and Serghei Verdes. The decrees were signed by the head of state on October 29.

Iurie Cara and Andrei Safonov are so-called members of the Supreme Council in Tiraspol. According to Zona de Securitate, they participated in adopting unconstitutional acts that violate the rights of Moldovan citizens in the Transnistrian region.

The two men also promote the ideology of the “Russian World” and advocate maintaining Russia’s illegal military presence on Moldovan territory, the source reported.

Serghei Verdes obtained Moldovan citizenship in violation of legal procedures, despite a negative assessment from the Information and Security Service (SIS), according to the same source.

In February 2026, Maia Sandu revoked the citizenship of nine current and former representatives of the Tiraspol regime. Among them was Vadim Cravciuc, a so-called member of the region’s legislature who is now running for the position of so-called president. He challenged the presidential decree in court.
