Maia Sandu: Russia Plans €100 Million Election Interference in Moldova

President Maia Sandu has warned that the Russian Federation intends to interfere in Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections by investing approximately €100 million. According to Sandu, the Kremlin is preparing a large-scale operation for September, aiming to gain control over the Republic of Moldova through unprecedented methods.

“The Russian Federation wants to take control of Moldova this autumn and is preparing massive interference in the elections. Our entire society must understand the threat. The Kremlin is investing in multiple political vehicles,” Sandu stated.

She explained that Russia will likely use various “vehicles” for this interference, including independent candidates and politicians secretly controlled by fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor.

Sandu also revealed that the interference campaign could involve coordinated protests, acts of vandalism against state institutions, and efforts to fuel euroscepticism.

In addition, she cited intelligence reports showing that the Kremlin is using a wide array of tools, such as social media manipulation and the involvement of criminal groups in destabilizing actions—including those within Moldovan prisons.

“The Kremlin may even exploit religion and use citizens’ personal data in fraudulent schemes. People who share personal information with unknown individuals or political agents may later discover that microloans have been taken out in their names in Russia,” she added.
