Maia Sandu to Meloni and La Russa: “Relations between the Republic of Moldova and Italy are better today than ever before”

Moldovan President Maia Sandu, visiting Rome, met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Senate President Ignazio La Russa.

“The relations between Moldova and Italy are stronger than ever. During my meetings with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Senate President Ignazio La Russa, I felt Italy’s sincere friendship and support for our country,” Maia Sandu said.

The discussions focused on deepening Moldova–Italy cooperation in economic development, security, and initiatives supporting European peace and stability.

“The connection between our countries is reinforced by the large Moldovan diaspora, respected here for their work, integrity, and contributions to the Italian economy,” the President added.

The officials welcomed the entry into force of the Bilateral Social Protection Agreement on September 1, 2025, and the updated Agreement on the Conversion of Driving Licenses on November 8, 2025. The social protection agreement guarantees Moldovans who worked in Italy a pension for their years of work, whether they remain in Italy or return home. The driving license agreement allows recognition and exchange of all Moldovan licenses, including future ones, eliminating previous difficulties.

They also discussed cooperation to ensure the integrity of Moldova’s electoral processes, including diaspora voting from Italy, and countering foreign interference attempts.

Since President Sandu’s official visit to Rome in June 2021, Moldova–Italy relations have strengthened, with Italy providing roughly €90 million in financial support, mainly for social protection and energy efficiency. This includes contributions to the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund and the installation of tens of thousands of smart meters, helping households reduce energy costs.

“We are grateful for Italy’s constant support and will continue working together to promote peace, prosperity, and the European future of our citizens,” Maia Sandu concluded.
