Maia Sandu travels to Rome. She will meet with Pope Leo and Italian officials

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, will carry out a working visit to Italy and the Holy See from September 10–12, 2025, where she will meet with the Pope.

In Rome, President Maia Sandu will meet with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, to discuss Italy’s support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, economic cooperation, and issues concerning the Moldovan community on the Peninsula. The visit program also includes a meeting with the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa.

At the Holy See, the head of state will be received by Pope Leo XIV. The agenda of the discussions will focus on promoting peace, solidarity, and Christian values in an international context marked by tensions. Maia Sandu will also meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican.

According to the Presidential Administration, the visit is part of the Republic of Moldova’s efforts to strengthen external partnerships and contribute to regional and European security.
