Orthodox Christians who follow the old calendar celebrate Christmas today, January 7, according to the old style (Julian calendar.) Traditionally, people attend church services and later gather with family and friends at the holiday table to mark the Nativity of the Lord.
Worshippers are encouraged to attend services because, as priests say, this holiday is an opportunity to draw closer to God. In some churches, the liturgy is held at night, similar to Easter, while in others, it occurs in the morning. The hymns are also special, as they glorify and praise the birth of Jesus Christ.
