Janis Mazeiks explains that the proposed amendment to the Land Code, which would allow foreigners to buy land in Moldova after the country joins the European Union, will be negotiated directly with local authorities. In a statement to TVR Moldova, the head of the EU Delegation in Moldova said that representatives of Russian propaganda had intentionally distorted his earlier comments on RLIVE TV.
“I have seen the messages from the President and the Prime Minister that Moldova will safeguard national interests during the negotiations. I can confirm that this is the aim of the negotiations. All countries that have joined the EU in the past 20 years have negotiated various prohibitions and restrictions on land sales to foreigners. It will be part of the negotiation process for Moldova in the future,” Mazeiks emphasized.
We note that on Friday, September 27, Janis Mazeiks spoke in the RLIVE TV studio about the disinformation regarding the sale of land to foreign citizens. As a result, several controversial politicians manipulated the information and explicitly stated that land would be sold to foreigners, even though Janis Mazeiks mentioned that they would discuss the subject during the negotiations.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean, President Maia Sandu, and civil society experts responded to the situation. The Prime Minister assured the public that the government would not negotiate the issues that contradict Moldova’s national interests. President Sandu also denied claims that authorities could sell land to foreign citizens. WatchDog analyst Andrei Curararu argued that Kremlin-affiliated agents have initiated a disinformation campaign on this topic. He highlighted that EU member states like Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Croatia, and Poland have imposed strict rules on such transactions or banned them altogether.
