MIA Instant Payments comes closer to people via QR code

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) actively promotes fast and convenient digital payments, showcasing them at the Forum of Trade Unions, where over 3,500 attendees tested QR code payments.

Inspired by the international success of digital payments in China and Brazil, the NBM, in partnership with payment service providers, recently launched MIA Instant — a QR code payment option. To raise awareness and offer the public a hands-on experience, the NBM’s Fintech team took part in the Forum of Trade Unions, held on March 28 at Arena Chisinau.
More than 3,500 participants explored the advantages and convenience of the MIA system firsthand.

Alexandra Sidorenco, Head of the Fintech Department at the National Bank of Moldova, said:

“I want to share something new: in addition to transferring money by phone number, you can now make payments via QR code — without carrying a single leu in cash. You can buy any product at participating kiosks using just your phone. Every MIA purchase supports a national project. It’s a source of pride to pay with MIA.”

Guided by the NBM representatives, hundreds of curious participants used their phones to scan QR codes and pay for snacks within seconds — without cash or cards. Each transaction is also automatically entered into a raffle with guaranteed prizes from MIA.
QR code payments work through any mobile banking app that supports the “MIA Instant Payments” feature. Users can make purchases by scanning a QR code — no need for physical cash or cards.

Dorina Miron, Fintech expert at the NBM, emphasized:

“MIA Instant Payments is a system created by the National Bank — by people, for people, to fit everyday life. Whether you’re transferring money to a colleague or splitting a restaurant bill with friends, MIA delivers fast and secure solutions.”

In addition to speed, simplicity, and security, QR code payments represent a major step in digitizing Moldova’s financial system. The Arena Chisinau event highlighted growing public interest in this payment method, and organizers are optimistic about expanding it nationwide.
