Minsk and Moscow Allege Human Rights Abuses in Moldova, Citing Slain Opponents and “Foreign Agent” Lists

Despite jailing many government opponents in Russia and Belarus, rigging elections, and labeling cultural figures and some public personalities as “foreign agents,” the Foreign Ministries of both countries have turned their attention to protecting human rights in Moldova. They published a joint report on the situation in several states, including ours, accusing Moldova’s government of trying to establish a totalitarian regime.

In the report, they recycled multiple Russian propaganda narratives, claiming the West wants to drag Moldova into a “Russophobic coalition” and that our authorities plan to turn us into a police state. They devoted nearly 100 pages to Moldova—dozens filled with data on alleged ethnic discrimination and the supposed suppression of May 9 commemorations.

They even analyzed drug-use statistics, alleged privatization of the Academy of Sciences land, and compared today’s railway passenger numbers with Soviet-era figures.

Relying heavily on Kremlin-aligned media, Telegram channels, and pro-Russian politicians in Chisinau, the authors portray Moldova as repeating Ukraine’s trajectory. They mention the Victory-Pobeda Bloc and Igor Dodon at least nine times each, presenting them as our country’s would-be saviors.

“At the instigation of their Western patrons, Chisinau copies not only the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv but also the nationalist governments of the Baltic states, whose driving forces—Russophobia and anti-Sovietism—date back to the Cold War. This course encourages society to view any confrontation with the Russian Federation, past or present, as inherently justified, blurring the lines between ‘Russian—Communist—Fascist,’” the report declares.

The diplomats from Russia and Belarus also assert that Romanian citizens run Moldova, which, in their view, undermines our national identity.

Realitatea’s editorial team asked the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a response to the joint Minsk-Moscow report. We had not received a reply by publication time and will update this story as soon as we do.
