Moldovans in Switzerland may soon gain access to social security guarantees, including various types of pensions, under a new agreement between the two countries. The Government of Moldova is preparing to approve the signing of an administrative arrangement to implement the Social Protection Agreement.
Under the agreement, Moldovan citizens residing in Switzerland will be eligible to receive:
- Old-age pensions
- Disability pensions (resulting from work accidents or occupational illnesses)
- Survivor pensions
Authorities will calculate and pay benefits based on the principle of proportionality, meaning it will cover only the period during which the beneficiary worked and contributed to its social security system.

On June 2, 2025, Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu signed the agreement in Bern. Buzu stated that approximately 10,000 Moldovan nationals living in Switzerland will benefit from it.
Social security agreements allow Moldovan citizens who have worked in Moldova and abroad to combine their insurance periods and qualify for pensions and other social benefits. For example, if a Moldovan citizen does not meet Moldova’s minimum contribution period, they can supplement it with officially recorded work periods abroad.
Moldova currently enforces 18 bilateral social security agreements. Each agreement allows the partner country to grant and pay pensions based on the individual’s legally recorded employment periods during which they made social contributions.
