On Wednesday, January 8, President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova spoke by telephone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussion focused on the humanitarian situation in the Transnistrian region, where the Russian company Gazprom’s halting of natural gas supplies, contrary to its contractual obligations, has triggered an acute crisis.
“Thousands of people are facing a lack of heat, light and, in some cases, access to drinking water, in cold weather and economic hardship,” reads a statement issued by the presidency in Chisinau.
The two leaders agreed to identify common solutions to prevent “a worsening of the humanitarian crisis and to protect the affected population, including through the use of alternative energy sources such as coal.” The presidency reported it.
