The Republic of Moldova will implement the MD-ALERT public warning system. The system will allow citizens to immediately receive warning messages directly on their mobile phones through communications operators’ networks in risk situations. The Government of the Republic of Moldova approved a draft decision to this effect today.
Authorities will use the public warning system during crises that endanger life and health, such as extreme weather phenomena, major accidents, or other emergencies.
Authorities consider the implementation of a public warning system a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova, given multiple global and regional challenges.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, stated that the new system will improve awareness of dangers, strengthen cooperation between institutions, and enable faster interventions, including evacuations and first aid.
At present, the Republic of Moldova lacks a mechanism to rapidly inform the population in situations of imminent danger, such as floods, heatwaves, extreme temperatures, or heavy precipitation.
Daniella Misail-Nichitin said, “The MD-ALERT system will transmit warning messages to the population through mobile communications networks using modern technologies, ensuring rapid and direct information for people in risk areas. It will improve awareness of dangers, enhance cooperation between institutions, and enable faster interventions, including evacuation and first aid. The implementation of the public alert system will increase collective resilience to hazards, strengthen institutional response capacity, and ensure prompt and accurate information for the population exposed to risks during crises.”
The implementation of MD-ALERT also aims to ensure interoperability with similar systems in the region, such as RO-ALERT in Romania. This will support both national protection and regional cooperation in crisis management.
Authorities are implementing the system in line with the National Programme for EU Accession of the Republic of Moldova 2025–2029. The Minister of Internal Affairs previously announced that the system will become operational in 2027.
