Moldova at the Olympic Games in Paris: how did the athletes perform?

From July 26 to August 11, Paris hosts the Summer Olympic Games, featuring 329 sets of awards across 32 sports. Moldova’s delegation includes 26 athletes competing in 10 sports.
Here is how Moldovan athletes performed during this time:

August 10

Wrestlers Radu Lefter and Maxim Sakulcan ended their participation in the freestyle wrestling competition at the 1/8 finals stage. Lefter, competing in the 97 kg category, lost to Poland’s Zbigniew Baranowski with a score of 2:8. Sakultsan, competing in the 65 kg category, lost to Japan’s Kotaro Kiyooka with a score of 0:10.

August 9

Anastasia Nikita won a silver medal in the freestyle wrestling competition under the 57 kg category. In the final, Anastasia lost to her Japanese opponent Tsugumi Sakurai. It is the first silver medal for Moldova at the Olympic Games in the last 24 years.

Canoeist Serghei Tarnovski won the bronze medal in the final of the canoe single 1000 meters event with a time of 3:44.68, the third bronze medal for Moldova at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Weightlifter Marin Robu took fourth place in the weight category, up to 89 kg and lifting 383 kg. The Moldovan Weightlifting Federation plans to protest against the judges’ decision, believing that the Italian athlete was wrongly awarded the bronze medal. Canoeists Daniela Cochu and Maria Olarashu finished seventh in the 500-meter canoe double final with a 1:56.96.

August 8

Moldovan athlete Anastasia Nikita made it to the finals of the freestyle wrestling competition (up to 57 kg category) at the Olympic Games in Paris. In the 1/8 finals, she defeated Sandra Paruszewski from Germany (0:9). In the quarterfinals – Julia Penalber from Brazil (0:5), and in the semifinals – Hong Kexin from China.

Javelin thrower Andrian Mardare competed in the finals of the competition. He took the last, 12th place, with 80.1 meters.

Canoeists Daniela Cocciu and Maria Olarashu reached the canoe single 200-meter event quarterfinals. Maria Olarashu competed in the second qualifying heat, where she clocked 50.14 seconds and finished last. Daniela Cociu competed in the third heat and finished fourth with 49.14 seconds. However, both athletes failed to qualify for the semifinals: Olarashu finished seventh in her heat with 52.03 seconds, while Coshu finished third in her heat with 48.93 seconds.

Dimitriana Bezeda failed to advance to the finals of the shot put competition. In the qualification round, she competed in Group B and finished in the penultimate place among 15 competitors, with a 16.35-meter result.

August 7

Greco-Roman wrestler Valentin Petik (67 kg) defeated Chile’s Nestor Almansa Truyol in the 1/8 finals of the Olympic Games. He won with a score of 4:0. In 1/4, Petic lost to Azerbaijan’s Hasrat Jafarov with a score of 1:3. An athlete from Moldova participates in the Olympic Games for the first time.

Moldovan canoeists Daniela Cociu and Maria Olarashu finished fourth in the qualifying heat of the 500-meter double canoe sprint at the Olympic Games in Paris. With this result, they advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will continue their fight to reach the semifinals.

August 5

Alexandra Emelyanova took 11th place at the Olympic Games in Paris. She recorded a result of 58.08 meters in the discus throw. The 24-year-old discus thrower Alexandra Emelyanova is participating in the Olympic Games for the second time, the first being the Tokyo Olympics.
Wrestlers Irina Ryngach and Victor Ciobanu lost their bouts at the Olympic Games in Paris and dropped out of the competition. Both athletes lost to their North Korean rivals (Irina Ryngach – Sol Gum Park (6:10) and Victor Ciobanu – Seung Lee (3:10).

August 4

Track and field athlete Zalina Margiyeva competed in the hammer throw. She failed to qualify for the finals. The athlete’s best result was 67.84 meters. She took 22nd place in the overall standings. In addition, Margieva broke the record. She is the only Moldovan athlete who participated in five consecutive Olympic Games.

August 2

Sergey Margiev, a hammer thrower, performed. The athlete did not qualify for the final part of the competition. Margiev performed in the qualifying round of Group A. The athlete managed to throw the projectile at 73.46 meters. With this indicator, he took 8th place in his group. However, to get to the finals, it was necessary to meet the qualification standard – to send the projectile to a distance of 77 meters or farther or to get among the 12 athletes with the best results.

Discus thrower Alexandra Yemilyanova made it to the final of the Olympic Games. The athlete met the qualifying standard of 64 meters on her first attempt. Yemilyanova threw the discus at 64.33 meters and automatically qualified for the finals, which will be on August 5.

August 1

Swimmer Tatiana Salkutsan performed. She failed to make it to the semifinals of the Olympic Games. In qualification, the athlete swam 200 meters backstroke in 2:13.20. More than 2 seconds separated her from the top 16 participants, who became semifinalists. The swimmer took 23rd place.

July 30

Rider Alisa Glinka. The athlete represents Moldova for the first time at the Olympics in equestrian competitions. The athlete failed to qualify and took 9th place out of 10 in Group C.
Archer Alexandra Myrca was defeated in the 1/32 finals, losing to her opponent from Malaysia. In three sets, Myrca scored 74 points out of 90 (27, 23, 24), while her opponent scored 83 points (30, 27, 26), gaining six points.

Judoka Mikhail Latyshev competed in the up-to-81 kg category but was defeated in the 1/16 finals. He lost to a Georgian athlete after receiving a ‘hansoku-make’ (suspension) in extra time for performing a prohibited hold.

July 29

Judoka Adil Osmanov competed in the category up to 73 kg and won a bronze medal. The athlete defeated representatives of the United States, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia before losing to a Frenchman in the semifinals.

July 28

Denis Vieru, judoka: competed in the category up to 66 kg and won the first bronze medal for Moldova. He defeated athletes from Finland and Serbia, but in the semifinals, he lost to a Japanese. In the fight for bronze, he defeated Frenchman Walid Hyar.

July 27

Swimmer Pavel Alovatsky failed to qualify for the 400-meter freestyle. He took 7th place in his heat.
Shooter Anna Dulce. The athlete competed in the air pistol shooting competition at a distance of 10 meters. She took 28th place and did not qualify for the finals.
Vladislav Ursu. The tennis player lost all four games in the qualification round against an American tennis player, becoming the first Moldovan participant in this discipline at the Olympics.
