Moldova Celebrates 34 Years of Independence with European Leaders’ Greetings

On Wednesday, August 27, the Republic of Moldova marks 34 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. On this occasion, several prominent European leaders sent congratulatory messages.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos wrote:
“Happy Independence Day, Moldova! Today, we celebrate your independence, achievements, identity, and traditions. A moment of pride. As you advance on the path toward the EU, Europe will continue to stand by you to build a brighter future for all Moldovans.”

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola highlighted Moldova’s European path, emphasizing a shared future of prosperity, progress, and perseverance.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen congratulated the people of Moldova and President Maia Sandu, stating: “This day is about Moldova’s democracy, the courage, and the people’s love for freedom. We will continue to stand with you on your journey toward a shared European future.”

In Moldova, the country’s leadership issued official messages and paid tribute at the “Maica Îndurerată” monument at the “Eternity” Memorial Complex. The Declaration of Independence, adopted in 1991, was signed by 278 deputies out of 380 elected members of parliament.
