The Republic of Moldova is enforcing the international restrictive measures that the United States imposed on Russian oil companies. The Interinstitutional Supervisory Council made this decision, and the authorities published it in the Official Journal.

The document states that the Council approved the decision because the activities of the sanctioned Russian oil companies pose risks by financing and supporting Russia’s aggression capabilities. These activities indirectly destabilize regional security, amplify threats to the international order, and affect the security interests of the Republic of Moldova. The authorities aim to prevent the use of the national financial and economic system to support such actions.

In late October, the United States Treasury Department announced sanctions against two major Russian oil companies to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance its war effort in Ukraine. Shortly after the announcement, the authorities in Chisinau said they were analyzing the impact of the sanctions, including possible effects on the petroleum products market in the Republic of Moldova.
