Moldova Introduces Fingerprinting for Protection Applicants and Foreign Detainees

The Moldovan government will fingerprint all applicants for protection within the country and foreigners detained at the state border. Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin explained that fingerprinting foreigners help manage international protection applications more effectively and strengthens efforts to combat crime.

The government approved a draft to modernize the fingerprint registration system. This update enhances authorities’ ability to prevent crimes, protect citizens, and efficiently process protection requests.

Minister Misail-Nichitin added that digital fingerprints enable rapid and accurate identification, which improves the personal safety of applicants by eliminating identity confusion, especially when false documents or multiple identities are involved.

This system ensures authorities can identify foreign protection applicants who commit crimes, even without valid documents or when they try to hide their identity.

The fingerprint registration process will also integrate with the European EURODAC system, fostering closer cooperation with the EU partners.
