The Ministry of Education and Research (MER) announced the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (ONIA) for the first time in the Republic of Moldova. The National Association of ICT Companies (ATIC) organizes the competition.
The Olympiad aims to develop students skills not only in creating ICT projects but also in building complex Artificial Intelligence models. Participants will apply their knowledge of mathematics, computer science, and AI, develop critical and creative thinking, and learn to use modern technologies in a responsible and ethical way.
The winners of the Olympiad will represent the Republic of Moldova at the international stage of the Artificial Intelligence Olympiad.
At the national level, teams will include up to two students and one coordinating teacher from the educational institution. Students aged 16 to 19 may participate, including those who studied Artificial Intelligence at school and those who learned AI independently.
Participants will develop Artificial Intelligence projects that propose concrete solutions to real problems in their communities or in the environmental field. They will use modern technologies, libraries, frameworks, and other AI specific tools. Teams may submit projects in Romanian, Russian, or English. All data use must comply strictly with ethical and legal standards, including data anonymization, MEC stated.
The competition includes the following stages:
- team registration by February 10;
- mentoring sessions from January to May;
- project submission in May;
- selection of finalists from May to June;
- ONIA final in June.
During the final stage, teams will present their projects to a jury of Artificial Intelligence experts, university professors, and industry specialists. The National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation (ANCE) will validate the final results.
The Olympiad winners will represent the Republic of Moldova at the international Artificial Intelligence Olympiad. In addition, the teams ranked first and second will receive an intensive training program before the international competition.
