Moldova Marks Victory Day and Europe Day on May 9: A Tribute to Peace, Freedom, and Unity

On May 9, Moldova commemorates two deeply significant events — Victory Day and Europe Day — honoring the sacrifices made during World War II and the country’s ongoing journey toward European integration.

Government spokesperson Daniel Voda highlighted the dual meaning of the day in a statement following a cabinet meeting. “On May 9, we honor the memory of those who paid the price of peace and celebrate Moldova’s path toward a united European family, consolidated by shared values,” he said.

Voda emphasized the importance of marking the day “with humanity and without politics,” pointing to its historical and symbolic weight. “May 9 is about remembering a victory against a fierce war and about the values that unite us on the European continent — freedom, solidarity, respect for each life,” he noted.

Commemorating the Fallen

In the morning, the country’s leadership will join citizens at the Eternity Memorial to mark 80 years since the victory over Nazism. Voda reminded that 56,000 Moldovans never returned home from World War II. “Each family lost a son, a daughter, a parent, or a grandparent. They dreamed of peace and died so that we could live in freedom. We must preserve the peace they secured with their lives. That is the legacy we must pass on,” he stated.

Commemoration events for veterans will take place across the country. “Moldova is a free country where we honor Victory Day and the memory of the fallen with dignity. No one forbids this commemoration. Our call is simple: cherish peace, show gratitude, and avoid politicization — approach this day with unity and humanity,” Voda urged.

Celebrating Europe Day

Also, on May 9, Moldova celebrates Europe Day. Starting at 13:00 in the National Assembly Square, the traditional European Village will open to the public. The event will feature diplomatic missions, ministries, and government agencies showcasing over 57 joint European projects in education, economy, infrastructure, and healthcare.

The day will conclude with a concert with artists from Moldova and abroad in the Great National Assembly Square.

Europe Day festivities will extend beyond the capital:

  • May 17: European Village in Causeni
  • May 9–31: European Film and Culture Festival, including public screenings, concerts, and performances in Balti, Ungheni, Cahul, Orhei, and other cities.

Coordinated Public Events

Voda confirmed that several political parties had requested public space for May 9-related activities. He assured that enforcement authorities are coordinating closely with organizers to ensure events proceed safely and smoothly.

“The central message from the authorities is clear: May 9 should pass without politicization but with humanity, fairness, and freedom. We are a free country and must express ourselves — including civic positions — within the bounds of the law,” Voda concluded.
