The Republic of Moldova is making significant strides in enhancing its image and partnerships in the Nordic region, particularly under the leadership of Ambassador Liliana Gutan. Over the past two years, the Moldovan Embassy in Stockholm has successfully improved relations with Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, focusing on collaboration in various sectors.
Ambassador Gutan noted, “During this period, we have transformed our challenges into opportunities, reinforcing Moldova’s commitment to European integration and regional security.”
Moldova stands out as a country profoundly affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine but has emerged as a proactive partner in regional stability. The “FromAid2Trade” strategy implemented by the embassy has attracted nearly €200 million in financial and technical support. This assistance has empowered Moldovan citizens through energy bill subsidies, education programs, and initiatives supporting Ukrainian refugees.
Moldova’s partnerships have yielded tangible benefits. Sweden has become the second-largest importer of Moldovan organic apples, showcasing the growing economic ties between the nations. The Moldovan apple industry has seen a significant boost, with over 30 companies receiving support from the National Board of Trade Sweden.
Additionally, important milestones were reached with Norway, including the ratification of the Free Trade Agreement with the EFTA countries, and the establishment of a Norwegian Embassy Office in Chisinau. The support from Norway has amounted to nearly €69 million in 2023, focusing on energy efficiency and education reforms.
In Finland, Moldova has gained inclusion in a €92 million assistance package for Ukraine, enhancing cooperation in education and security. Finland’s expertise is invaluable in combatting hybrid threats, making their support crucial for Moldova’s strategic goals.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Gutan emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration: “Our work does not stop here. We are preparing for high-level visits and creating new opportunities for our entrepreneurs and artists, ensuring that Moldova continues to thrive on the European path.”
As Moldova prepares for the presidential election and constitutional referendum on October 20, 2024, citizens living in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland will have the opportunity to vote by post for the first time. The embassy is committed to facilitating this process, ensuring that every Moldovan citizen can exercise their democratic rights.
