Moldova Requests Grace Period from U.S. Ahead of New Customs Tariffs Implementation

The authorities in the Republic of Moldova have formally requested a grace period from the United States before new customs duties are implemented. Cristina Ceban, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economy, announced during an interview with Radio Moldova that the Chisinau administration is currently awaiting a response from the United States.

Ceban explained that discrepancies exist between how U.S. and Moldovan authorities calculate import statistics. In response, Moldovan officials have provided the American side with detailed data on the volume and nature of Moldovan product exports to the United States.

“We’ve requested a grace period—an extended timeline—for the implementation of the current tariffs,” said Ceban. “This would allow us the opportunity to discuss the possibility of a bilateral agreement or understanding with the U.S. We’re not referring to a free trade agreement, as that involves an entirely different procedure. At this time, we are still awaiting a response from the Department of Commerce.”
