Moldova will collaborate with Sweden to develop waste-to-energy transformation projects, following a 9-million Swedish crowns (€820,000) grant agreement signed between Moldova’s Ministry of Energy and Swedfund International AB, Sweden’s Development Finance Institution.
Under this agreement, Swedfund will finance feasibility studies for waste-to-energy facilities in two settlements in Moldova.
Energy Transition and Sustainable Waste Management
Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu expressed gratitude for Sweden’s support, emphasizing that the project will:
- Explore Moldova’s waste-to-energy potential
- Strengthen renewable energy production
- Improve waste management efficiency
Sweden’s Ambassador to Moldova, Katarina Fried, highlighted the project’s role in enhancing Moldova’s energy security and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
“The aim is to establish sustainable waste management solutions that transform waste into valuable resources, such as electricity and heat,” she stated.
Study and Expected Outcomes
The 6-12 month feasibility study will assess:
✅ Viable technologies based on waste type and processing capacity
✅ Cost-efficiency of different solutions in Moldova’s economic context
✅ Energy recovery models, including electricity and heat integration into the national grid
✅ Environmental and social impact, such as reducing landfill waste, CO₂ emissions, and resource conservation
