The development of Moldova’s renewable energy sector was the focus of a recent meeting between Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Prime Minister Recean highlighted Moldova’s progress in boosting energy security over the past four years, noting two current priorities: increasing the share of renewables in national consumption and enabling energy exports.
“The capacity for renewable energy production has increased eightfold, reaching nearly 650 MW. We will soon add another 165 MW following a recent tender. On favorable weather days, up to 30% of Moldova’s energy comes from renewable sources—a target initially set for 2030. In 2020, that share was just 3%,” Recean stated.

He emphasized Moldova’s need for greater visibility to attract investment. Pointing to plans for a new tender in autumn 2025 focused on wind farms and energy storage systems: “We need more competition and international participation in our procurements. This initiative will help stabilize and modernize our grid.”
Francesco La Camera underscored the importance of renewable energy and cross-border energy interconnectivity, particularly in current geopolitical challenges. The IRENA also expressed readiness to support Moldova in implementing large-scale energy storage projects.
