The Republic of Moldova will join the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil or Commercial Matters. The accession bill was approved by Parliament in the first reading and is expected to establish a mechanism allowing Moldovan court decisions to be enforced in other countries.
By joining the Hague Convention, Moldova will become part of an international system that sets common rules for the recognition and enforcement of court judgments in civil and commercial cases. As a result, decisions issued by courts in member states will be eligible for recognition and enforcement in Moldova, while rulings issued by Moldovan courts will be able to produce legal effects in other participating countries.
The convention establishes clear conditions for recognizing foreign judgments and limits the grounds on which enforcement may be refused. Authorities say that accession will strengthen legal certainty, reduce costs, and simplify procedures in disputes involving individuals or companies from different countries.
The agreement provides an international legal framework for more efficient resolution of cross-border disputes and is considered an instrument that can facilitate international trade, investment, and economic cooperation.
The convention was adopted in The Hague in 2019. Its parties include the European Union, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Albania, and other states.
For Moldova, the convention will enter into force one year after the country deposits its instrument of accession, which will take place after the completion of internal ratification procedures.
