Moldova Wins European Award for Sustainable Cultural Tourism

Moldova has been named one of the winners of the Sustainable Cultural Tourism Destinations 2025 competition, organized by the European Cultural Tourism Network in partnership with the European Travel Commission.

The DescOpera Festival earned the award in the category Resilience in Sustainable Cultural Tourism Destinations, recognized as a model that blends natural heritage with opera art while actively involving local communities.

Held annually in the breathtaking Orheiul Vechi Cultural-Natural Reserve — a site of national and international importance — the festival gathers opera artists and musicians from Moldova and abroad on an open-air stage. It draws tourists from around the world and supports the local economy through responsible tourism.

According to the Ministry of Culture, this distinction proves that Moldova can compete at the highest European level in cultural tourism. Authorities say they are committed to supporting similar initiatives by investing in infrastructure, modernizing tourist attractions, and diversifying the country’s cultural offerings.

The award ceremony will take place on 1–4 October 2025 in Sibiu, Romania, during the International Conference on Cultural Tourism, which brings together European experts, policymakers, and industry operators.
