Moldovan and Romanian Prime Ministers Visit Chisinau Substation Ahead of Vulcanesti-Chisinau Power Line Launch

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu visited the Chisinau electrical substation, part of the strategic Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line project, which is expected to strengthen the country’s energy security.

During the visit, officials were briefed on the progress of the works, and the team responsible for implementing the project requested that the construction acceptance commission be convened. This is the final stage before the power line can be commissioned and enter commercial operation.

The modernisation works at the Chisinau electrical substation were carried out by the Romanian-German consortium comprising Siemens Energy, Electromontaj and Energotech, which was responsible for designing, supplying and installing the equipment.

The 157-kilometre Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line will enable electricity to be transmitted directly from Romania to central Moldova. The project represents a strategic investment in the country’s energy independence and in strengthening energy connections with Romania and the European market.

The project is financed by the World Bank Group under the Moldova Electricity System Development Project.
