A serviceman of Moldova’s National Army has died. The Ministry of Defense announced the death, noting that the young officer was studying in the United States.
“We deeply regret to announce the sudden death of our colleague, Captain Nicolae Velicico, a responsible and dedicated professional in the engineering corps. After graduating from the ‘Alexandru cel Bun’ Military Academy, Nicolae Velicico served in the ‘Codru’ Engineer Battalion, taking part in multiple demining operations and efforts to address the consequences of natural disasters in Moldova, contributing to the protection and safety of citizens.
The officer was part of the National Army’s engineering team during two KFOR peacekeeping missions in Kosovo. Nicolae also supervised engineering works for the installation of the pontoon bridge across the Prut River at the Leova-Bumbăta Border Crossing Point, which became operational in 2023.
Nicolae passed away while studying in the United States, leaving his family, colleagues and friends mourning his loss. The Ministry of Defense extends its sincere condolences to the bereaved family following the death of the serviceman,” the ministry said.
The Ministry of Defense, in cooperation with the U.S. side, will arrange the repatriation procedures.
