Moldovan Athletes to Receive Higher Awards for International Success, Following Gold Medals at 2025 World University Games

Moldovan athletes who win medals at major international competitions — including the World University Games — will soon receive increased financial awards, according to Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun. The announcement comes in the wake of remarkable performances by Moldovan wrestlers at the 2025 Games recently held in Chengdu, China.

Minister Perciun publicly congratulated Adil Osmanov and Ivan Corsunov, both of whom secured gold medals in their respective freestyle wrestling categories.

“Thank you for having represented us with dignity and proving, once again, that Moldovan sport has a future. You are an example for the youth of Moldova,” said Dan Perciun in his message to the national university team.

Perciun also revealed that the Ministry is working on a draft government decision to raise financial rewards for Moldovan athletes who reach the podium at significant international competitions — a move aimed at further motivating high-level performance.

Notable Performances in Chengdu

  • Adil Osmanov dominated the 74 kg freestyle wrestling category, defeating top contenders from Japan, Iran, and the USA in a flawless run to the gold medal.
  • Ivan Corsunov emerged victorious in the 86 kg category, showcasing technical skill and mental resilience in a commanding final match.

Both athletes are viewed as rising stars in Moldovan sport, with realistic prospects of qualifying for the World Championships and future Olympic Games.
