Moldovan Citizens Who Worked in Italy Will Receive Social Benefits Starting September 1

Starting September 1, Moldovan citizens who worked in Italy and paid social contributions will become eligible for social benefits under a new agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that eligible Moldovan citizens will receive retirement pensions, survivors’ pensions, disability pensions, and allowances for work-related accidents or occupational diseases, depending on their contributions.

Authorities will combine work periods completed in both Moldova and Italy to determine pension eligibility. Citizens can submit their pension applications either in Moldova or Italy.

To support the process, the Moldovan Embassy in Rome and the consulates in Milan and Padua will host public information sessions in September and October 2025. Specialists from the National Social Insurance House will attend to answer questions and provide guidance.

By 2022, more than 271,000 Moldovan citizens had contributed to Italy’s pension system. Officials estimate that about 25,000 will receive pensions from Italy by 2034.
