Moldovan Parliament Speaker Walks Out in Protest During Russian Address at Global Summit

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu announced that he, along with counterparts from several countries, walked out of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva when the Speaker of the Russian Federation’s Parliament, Valentina Matvienko, began her speech.

“This was an act of solidarity with Ukraine,” Grosu said, emphasizing Moldova’s unwavering support for its neighbor since the start of Russia’s invasion.

Grosu reaffirmed that Moldova stands with the Ukrainian people in their struggle for sovereignty, freedom, and territorial integrity.

“For three years, Ukraine has fought for a united and sovereign country. We must support them—as a sign of respect for a people determined to decide their future and be masters in their own home,” he stressed.

The walkout by parliamentary leaders was widely viewed as a reaffirmation of international support for Ukraine and a defense of democratic values in Eastern Europe.

In his remarks at the conference, Grosu also reiterated Moldova’s commitment to European integration and democratic consolidation. “Moldova firmly stays on the European path,” he said, expressing gratitude for the ongoing support from partner countries.
