Moldovan Railways Will Transform 21 Stations into Stopping Points by Year-End

By the end of this year, Moldovan Railway Company (CFM) will convert 21 of its 71 railway stations into stopping points. These simplified stops will serve only for boarding and disembarking passengers on local and suburban routes. They will not include station staff, baggage services, or the facilities of a fully equipped station.

The CFM analyzed freight transport flows and identified several sections of infrastructure that have remained unused for years. The company stated that maintaining these inactive sections with their buildings and equipment incurs high costs that no longer make financial sense.

The CFM expects to save about three million lei each month by reorganizing the network. The company will use these savings to pay off outstanding salaries, streamline operations, and strengthen service at nearby junction stations.

In a related decision, CFM announced plans to eliminate direction controls and mechanical barriers at 30 railway-level crossings. Due to limited funds, the company will keep only four direct level crossings nationwide. It will mark the rest with road signs or, where possible, equip them with automatic barriers.

The CFM confirmed that the changes will affect several employees. The company will relieve retirees of their duties and reassign other staff to different roles.
