Moldova’s EU Accession Progressing at Record Speed, Says European Commissioner

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced that Moldova’s EU accession is advancing at an unprecedented pace. She highlighted a €1.9 billion support package to boost the country’s economy.

At a news conference, Kos praised Moldova’s commitment to reforms despite significant external challenges.

“About 1,000 people are working for Moldova in Brussels alone. Soon, we will open several clusters. We are already analyzing Cluster 2 (Internal Market) and Cluster 6 (External Relations). This process will be completed by the end of March, and everything is progressing well,” she said.

Kos expressed confidence that Moldova would complete accession negotiations before her mandate expires.

“If Moldova does not finalize the negotiations by the end of my mandate, I will consider it a failure. However, I am confident we will complete the technical part. If you remain as persistent as you are now, we will finish negotiations by 2029,” she stated.

She also addressed the €1.9 billion support package, emphasizing that Moldova’s economy could double by the decade’s end if the government fully implements reforms.
Kos stressed the importance of a clear reform agenda, noting that the EU will disburse funds in semi-annual installments.

“For each new payment, Moldova must implement reforms step by step. We will monitor progress closely, ensuring funds are allocated accordingly,” she added.

Regarding Moldova’s energy sector, Kos underlined the urgent need to secure the country’s energy independence. With strong political will and continued reforms, Moldova is on track to make significant strides toward EU membership.
