More investments in Moldova’s regions: EU allocates €1.5 million for infrastructure development in Cahul and Ungheni

The European Union is allocating 1.5 million euros to foster the development and modernization of infrastructure in the Cahul and Ungheni regions. This initiative, part of the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions program executed by UNDP and UNICEF, aims to stimulate investment by introducing key enhancements. Among the noteworthy projects are the establishment of a technology center for innovation and production in Sculeni, the revitalization of an industrial hub in Ungheni, the construction of a regional agri-food market in Cahul, and the enhancement of landscaping and road access for the local business development center in Crihana Veche.

Financing for each of these four initiatives falls within the range of 200 thousand to 550 thousand euros. The recent allocation of four certificates totaling 1.5 million euros marks a significant milestone in the program. EU Ambassador to Moldova, Jānis Mažeiks, emphasized the positive impact these projects will have on the development of Cahul and Ungheni regions, enhancing citizens’ lives by providing access to quality services, modern infrastructure, and additional employment opportunities.

Highlighting the broader implications of attracting new companies, UNDP Resident Representative to Moldova, Daniela Gasparikova, stressed the potential for long-term benefits. Beyond immediate economic gains, the influx of new businesses contributes to improving residents’ living standards and reducing unemployment rates. Local public authorities in Ungheni and Cahul regions are anticipated to experience increased revenues earmarked for further development of local infrastructure and services.

The selected initiatives, chosen through an open competition, aim to catalyze new investments, support start-ups, create jobs, and promote innovative technologies by attracting competitive businesses at the local level. The success of these endeavors relies on the presence of robust public infrastructure, encompassing water supply systems, sewage, electricity, natural gas, and road networks.

The EU4Moldova: Focal Regions program, with a total budget of 23 million euros, is committed to supporting smart, inclusive, and sustainable socio-economic development in Cahul and Ungheni regions. Funded by the EU and executed by UNDP and UNICEF, the program aspires to elevate the standards of living for citizens in the targeted regions.
